Digital Video in P.E.

This topic intrigues me because physical education is an ideal setting to use digital video in. Students benefit from seeing how they perform (whether it be in a fitness or sport-specific setting). We place a large focus on form and execution in P.E. In order to achieve optimal results from strength training and flexibility activities it is important that they are done properly. The other exciting thing about using digital video to record students' performance is that middle schoolers (the age group that I teach) LOVE to use this type of technology. They are eager to record their classmates and often know exactly how to use the equipment. At the end of the assignment, they are able to take ownership over their learning AND work well with others.

  1. I agree; digital video really does work well for the physical education environment. Understanding the movement patterns is vital to performing and understanding a number of skills properly. The students are more than eager and capable of using the technology at the upper elementary to high school level; and would be able to relate to the material better. Taking the time to teach the editing software and filming/planning procedures (treatment, storyboard, etc.) would give students a bonus for future projects in any field.

  2. I agree with Ian; that it would work well in physical education. Sometimes when we tell students that they are doing something wrong, they do not always believe us. Come on, why would we make it up, we have better things to do. But anyway, they can see for themselves that they are indeed doing a skill incorrectly and can fix it, hopefully!
